Teaching English at Public Schools in Korea

NIIED, affiliated with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is a government organization with the aim to develop and foster human resources in the age of globalization and achieves the following tasks.

First, to focus on education of 7 million overseas Koreans in more than 150 countries worldwide by seeking establishment of national identity, encouraging successful life in their residing countries and contributing the development of international society.

Second, play a leading role in revitalization of international education through exchange with international education organizations domestic and abroad, send and invite students under national government scholarship programs and hold study abroad career fairs.

Third, manage EPIK (English Program In Korea) and Talk (Teach and Learn in Korea) program. EPIK seeks to enhance English communicative skills of Korean students and teachers, and increase national competitiveness and cultural exchange in the era of globalization. TaLK, a Government scholarship program, aims to provide opportunities to learn a living English in educationally weak areas and increase understanding of Korea to foreigners.

EPIK was established in 1995 with the mandate to improve the English speaking abilities of students and teachers in Korea, to develop cultural exchanges, and to reform English teaching methodologies in Korea.

EPIK extends invitations to responsible, enthusiastic native English speakers who are motivated to share knowledge with students and teachers.

It is hoped that through EPIK, English language education will cultivate open-minded and well-rounded Korean individuals capable of advancing Korea in this age of information and globalization. It is also expected that in doing so, EPIK will promote cultural exchanges and foster strong ties between Korea and other countries.
